The Spiderwick Chronicles has many similarities and differences than normal Thrillers. Like many Thrillers it has a tendency to hide the main characters form the audience for as long as possible and they create tension with fast pace of editing and sinister music which also makes the sequence much more up beat and panicky. However some Thrillers do not have a fast pace of editing to create tension some of them have really slow pace of editing to create a lot of tension which definitely ensures the audiences attention. Many Thrillers also use low key lighting to create tension, as this does, and it also uses a lot of different shots of different areas around the room. This makes the audience ask questions about this man's kind of life, what his profession is and what sort of man he is. The music is played while the production companies are presented instead of when the movie itself starts. The titles that show, again, the production companies appear just as a beam of moon light penetrates the old wooden roof. the slow atmosphere is broken as the main character bursts into the room which starts to bring the tension up a level every second. This persuades the audience to watch on because they wish to know what happens next and makes them ask: Why is he so agitated? The lighting suddenly lifts up, but not too much in able to maintain the tension, otherwise the audience would find the film boring before any of the action had even started. There are no titles showing the actors, productions managers, directors, editors, etc. which may suggest that the main focus of the opening sequence is to introduce the main character and the main prop used throughout the entire film. The title of the film itself materializes through tree branches and the faint image of a spiders web is seen for a brief time. The font of the movie title is a more mystical and magical font with the "R" of "Spider" looking like the roots or branches of a tree. It then fades away in a whoosh of fog or mist and we then see a passage of time with a fade from one shot of the house looking normal, almost brand new- To another shot of the house absolutely covered in ivy vines, tree branches and bushes with the trees around the grounds looking a similar age to the current time. We are then shown a caption which reinforces the passage of time saying "80 Years Later". This leads the audience to wonder what happened in all that time just gone which will make them watch more of the film.
