Assessment - Evaluation posts check (SJA Feb 14th)

Kris, you were absent when I arranged with the class to 100% complete 2 evalution questions of their choice.

Anyway, I have glanced over your evaluation posts so far...

WWW:
- Really good to see that you have made a good start on all 7 questions, with some attempts to make posts visual.

- Generally, thoughtful comments that show a good overall grasp of what each question is asking you to reflect on

EBI:
- You rely on Wordle too much to make your blog posts visual Kris. I don't mind one or two uses of Wordle... but no more. You want to show off what you can do technically on the blog by making posts very creative and 'super visual' as we keep telling you - Wordle is not the most creative thing really is it??!
- I'd like to see more gofs and screen grabs of your own film (specific shots / titles, etc) with comparision to screen grabs from similar films to your own - especially for Q. 1. I should be seeing images of Angel and yourself and Ben as characters from your film in the post on 'Representation'... and also images of your 'ideal' target audience for Q. 4. The question on New technologies (Q. 7) should make use of JING or some other screen cast software to SHOW all of the various technologies you make use of daily in Media to create this project.

Overall, more time and creativity needed to improve your evaluation Kris: IN (improvement needed)

Q 7: How I have I progressed from my Preliminary task to my Main task

I think that I have improved from our preliminary task to our main media product, through all the media work looking at different opening sequences and evaluating them has improved my understanding on how to create a good opening sequence and has also helped improve knowledge of the many different media terms and words.
throughout our main media product I have become a better team player by having good communication with my group and presenting ideas when I have them, whereas during our preliminary task I was the person always listening and getting told what to do. I have now learnt that a team cannot work together if everyone member of said team isn't given the chance to work together. while working on the macs I have learnt different types of editing and I am not afraid to try new editing methods and try out new effects for our opening sequence. I have also become more comfortable with using a wide range of different shots to show a different view of a range of different perspectives along with others to add an effect for the audience where necessary.

Q 1: In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products

In our opening sequence the the conventions that we used in our opening sequence is, the male as the lead role and always shown as the more dominate and the more powerful people within the the opening sequence, the other convention that we used was a female damsel in distress and the female is shown as the person always in trouble and shown as the person that is being chased by the stronger, more dominant males. We also used the convention of an isolated area for our main setting to add a sense of fear and loneliness, this was used to emphasize the fact that our main character might be being followed.

The conventions that we have challenged we we made a female the main charecter this has developed the conventions because it is usually males that are the main character and are shown as the strong charecters who save the world or when they get into trouble that are able to easily get out of it.

The Sixth Sense-
This shot is taken behind a small flight of stairs and would suggest that the main character in the shot is being watched and she suspects this.

What Is Reality?-
This is our own product and we decided to use a similar shot to suggest that the main character is being watched. However, she does not know this.

Assessment 23/1/12 LFE

WWW
  • Kris you have attempted all of the posts we have asked for so far which is good.
  • You have started to make them some of them visual
  • There are lots of ideas in your responses that just need some further thought
  • A good list of media technologies used
EBI
  • Start to make all of your posts super visual, you have included some Wordl presentations but now see if you can make these posts better.
  • You have a long list of media technologies you have used, you could now make this super visual by creating a Jing presentation showing how you have used them and what benefit they have been to you.
  • Many of your posts need developing in their thoughts. Mrs Jarrett gave you a presentation this morning on representation and audience, use some of this to help better inform your ideas.
Grade: IN (these are drafts that with some work will get better)

Q 3: What kind of media institution might distribute your product and why?

As a group we have decided to use Lionsgate as our distrubtion company for our opening sequence. We believe Lionsgate was a better choice then some because they have dstirubted many different types of horrors and thrillers, and because of this, we chose to use Lionsgate. We also chose it because of how our genre is a mixture of thriller and horror and also it has disturbuted many big brand films, one of the films that this distubution company has distubted is SAW, a big brand film and is watched by many people so we decied through the genre of our opening sequences and other films the disturbution company has decided to distribute.

Q 5: How did you attract / address your audience?

We appealed to our target audience of people through the costume, the charetcers would wear more young youth club and this would show the youth and this would help to capture our young youth target audience because then they are able to related with the charecter because of their costume and also they are able to relate through the setting the opening sequence is filmed in because the setting is the kind of place that teenagers would enjoy to hang down with there mates because it is deserted and not many people stay around there so it would be a good place for the young youth to be able to have fun and enjoy themselves. we also appealed to our target  audience through the way we show them to have more authority than the adults and this helps us to be able to show them to be in control of the situtation and what is going to happen throughout the opening sequence. Our audience research helped us with this because it showed that the people that would come to see our film are of a younger generation as the characters would appeal more to that audience

Q 6: What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Working in your groups to edit adds more to the list:
In the group we used the effect fog and to create the effect on the audience of good and evil, we changed the colour of the fog to red and these shows evil because red is always used to show people that are evil. To show the audience the type of opening sequence it is we used the sound voice from hell because this creates the feeling of death and evil and gets the audience wanting to watch on to see what the film is about. We used phone vibrations and clock sound to make the particular clips stand out from the rest of the because the sounds would be louder the would sync with the rest of the clip. We used a drum beat to make the running scenes stand out more to show the theme of panic and this gets the audience worried about what is going to happen, to show the change in place we changed the sound to horror ambiance sound and this creates a scary effect for the audience.

Write down the names of the technology that you have used:
IMovie
Jing
Camera
Tripod
Internet
YouTube
Free sound
Gorilla pod

Write the name of the specific tools/ affects you have used:
Transition-dissolved
Effected- Aged film
Tri pod
Camera
IMovie

What have you learned choose three technologies explain when you have used them and what effect you here able create by using it:
The fog effect we used during the voice over clips and we used this to change the effect onto the audience. We change the colour of the fog by, going onto the effect of the fog and then you move the white dot along the line from white to black and during each step it will change the colour of the fog to the colour you want, we chose red to show the emotion and feeling of good and evil.
We used a sound from free sound to create a spooky and horror effect and this enabled us to create atmosphere the sound was voice from hell, this created the effect of be scared and helped to create the effect of be lonely and this helps to get the audience involved because they would ask questions about why is she alone and through the they would understand what type of opening sequence it is.
We used Jing to create super visual work; I used Jing to create a video of me typing the work onto a work document and this enabled me to create the written work more visual than having people just reading the work from the page and off the blog, Jing helps people to create videos of different things and this enabled to make the written more interesting to look at.

Q 4: Who would be the audience for your media product?

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our opening sequence are young audiences because the characters that are shown in the opening sequence are young adults and they are doing typical actions that young adults would do.  We show the typical stereotype of young female adults that they need help by a man this is shown in our opening sequence by Angel running through the woods and by Angel always having a worried face and she kept looking behind her to show that she needs a man to help her and to show that she is being followed and that being a young teenage girl they are scared easily, we show this through the fast pace movement on the running scene and the Angel uses facial expression to show a frightened young adult. The target audience would people that enjoy watching films and getting clues about what the main idea and plot is and enjoy films that they are able to get involved, we help the audience to get involved by using different amounts of sound and different effects to show the different emotions of all the people within the opening sequence.

The opening sequence is aimed for people that enjoy films that have a mixture of horror so they can watch a film and feel good about themselves because the people within the film are doing many different actions that allow, this would help to get the audience involved because they are doing the wrong actions and this would help the audience to get involved by telling the people in the film not to do that it’s the wrong choice because the audience would enjoy the film more because they are getting involve with it and all though there is scary scene and there is also scene that would make you feel sorry for the different people and the audience would feel sorry for the young adult because Angel would give the impression that she is being followed. We came to this conclusion by conducting some extensive audience research. We did this by have people from a ranged age group fill in a questionnaire about what kind of film they would enjoy along with what they want to happen in that film.

Q 2: How does your media product represent particular social groups?

How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Our opening sequence holds many different types of groups, the first group is gender, male and female, the female are shown as weak and the men are meant to be the people are that are meant to save them, we show that the female is weak because in the running scene we changed her facial expressions to make her look worried and to give the audience the impression that she is being watched and followed, this give the audience the impression that she is weak and that she is in trouble wherever she goes within the woods, also we show that she is weak when she wakes up and she looks around her place with very worried facial expressions and this gives the  impression that she is being watched and that where she is she is not safe.

The other group we are trying to show is young adults and the youth group that young females are brave but scarred when they get worried, we show all this when she is running and when she wakes up in the new place, we show that she is brave because of how she acts when she walks in the woods and when she wakes up she gets worried about being watched and then she starts running and this shows that she is scarred because she is worried that she is being followed, also we are trying to show that
young male adults are more dominate are have more power because of how the female in our opening sequence is always running and looking scared when she see them.

However, in The Sixth Sense, we can see the main character standing in a very venerable position with her arms close to her chest as if she knows someone is there watching her. Whereas, in our opening sequence, the main character is oblivious to the fact that she is being followed. This adds a sense of fear within the audience and will help them connect with the film.

Casting - Kris Bean

We have chosen Kris to play one of the two men that followed the main character because he does the Drama Academy and is capable of showing no emotions: For example- Keeping a streight face.

Titles

We chose many different font, but we couldn't choose all of them. We wanted to use three different type and these are the ones we preferred.

The costume is a grey Hoodie, blue jeans, black canvas shoes

Prop mobile phone to create an eerie effect because we are going to use it for the main character to answer and this will make the audience ask questions about who is on the phone and what do they want.

Initial Ideas

The really good location idea we had was the forest, the reason for this was because it creates a mysterious atmosphere which would intrigue the audience and ensure the security of their attention. The best prop we have would be a threatening note saying; "Your Time is Up!" which would force the audience to ask the question of what would happen which would also make them want to watch more of the film.

Research assessment [peer]

Audiecne Research Results

Media Opening sequence Questionnaire (Audience Research 1)

Location Research

I believe that this will be a good location to use because it will show kind of life the main character has.

This will be one of the key locations of the film because it will show the pssibility of maybe a hidden life that he might have left behind.

This location is interesting as it will show the daily routine of the character.
